Introduction

The Department of Mass Communication was established in the early years of the formation of the University of Southern Punjab. The department of Mass Communication was introduced in 2010, and started to offer M.Sc. Mass Communication to educate the students of Media Studies.

The BS Mass Communication a four years program was introduced by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan to cultivate in-depth knowledge and   professional skills .The University of Southern Punjab has honor to pass out four Batches of Mass Communication graduates successfully. They are serving the nation in digital, electronic & print media on higher designations and producing quality content.

The significance of Mass Communication discipline is growing rapidly in   technologically empowered world. The discipline of Mass Communication is competing with Information and Communication technology.

The Mass Communication subject delivers multidimensional knowledge, and skills. The students are trained for the professional journalism. The department of media & communication studies is imparting the skills required for  Mass Communication theory & research, communication skills,  film production, documentary production, digital content creation, advertising, news writing, audio & video editing, Public relation,  media discourse analysis and journalistic writing.

It’s a proverb, “Knowledge is not a right it’s a privilege”. If the knowledge and information is used wisely. It can prove a great resources. The societies are dependent on media platforms for their healthy connection, survival and progress. As; the information and right time information helps in accelerating the progress and development of individuals and society. The social institutions performs their function more vigilantly due to media platforms. The institutions are accountable in front of masses for their policies and performance. The department of mass communication is trying to prepare media graduates to perform this duty more instinctively.

The vision of the Department of Mass Communication is to produce energetic communication experts. They will have command to communicate their knowledge and acquired professional skills in all specialized fields of mass communication like Print, Radio TV production, Public Relation & Advertising, Digital Media , Drama & Film Production, and Theory and Communication Research.

To provide subject’s knowledge and professional skills according to contemporary age and professional requirement. The department of mass communication is ardent to provide specialization according to individual student interest and aptitude. The department is focused in promotion of responsible media professionals, vigilant to safe guard the rights of individuals, and country at large. The department is pursuing to bring dynamic change to improve governance issues, economy of the country, address the issues on main stream media to bring educational, political, and social reforms. The department of mass communication is flourishing to become a leading institute in media industry on national and international level through its professionally skilled graduates and by creating awareness for the freedom of speech with responsibility in favor of country’s positive image in front of world

Scope of Mass Communication

The field of Media Studies has developed rapidly in the last two decade. It is an undeniable fact that the world is moving ahead rapidly. All social sectors are dependent on media for information and propagation of their activities. The contemporary technologically empowered world has required skilled and talented media professional to fulfill the media market demand. They may portray positive image of the country on national level and worldwide. Media Studies education is manifestly of vital importance in the age of globalization and digital media.

The graduates of Mass Communication can do wonders in the field of electronic media as anchor persons, newscasters, photographers, videographers, RJs, producers, reporters etc. In print media, they can work as a scriptwriter, editor, columnist, feature writer, researcher, news writer, copy writer. In advertising, media graduates can be employed as a creative copy write. They can play an effective role as Public Relation officer. Mass Communication graduates will have career opportunities in following computing sectors: like games, graphics, illustration, communication technologies, music, web design, social media marketing, E-learning, e-business, digital media, and animation.
